Mental Techniques for Golf That WORK!

4 Steps to Visualization Success

You are looking at a twenty foot putt.

You tell yourself - "No way am I going to make this, I will probably come up short, too long, wide left, wide right, I might be able to get close but no way will it go in the hole from this distance".

You are visualizing yourself to fail. You are making images in your mind of all of the things that you don't want to happen.

Many people complain that they cannot visualize, they cannot see clear pictures in their minds.

Here is a test to see if you can visualize - what color is your car?

To answer this question you had to think about an image of your car.

So if you answered the question - you can visualize.  

Everyone can visualize, because visualizing is just thinking - and the mind thinks in images.  

Not everyone has an exact 3D picture of what they are visualizing, but that is OK because everyone visualizes in their own way.

“You might be asking ‘Why should I use visualization?

What’s the big deal?

What’s in it for me?’

Good questions!

Researchers have found that when a person vividly visualizes an action in their mind the exact same group of neurons fire off in the same exact pattern as if the person were actually doing the action physically.

It has been found that visualizing, and the accompanying neural activity, is responsible for an improvement in neuro-muscular coordination.

When you visualize teeing off, chipping, putting, you are strengthening your mind/body connection, and improving your chances of lowering your score.”

Here are the four easy yet effective steps to visualize and achieve your goals.

 Step 1 - Get Motivated to do the Mental Technique of Visualization.  

What is the end result of what you want to happen?

Think about all of the benefits you will receive when that result is reality.

Many golfers avoid using mental techniques, not realizing that mental techniques will make them play better much faster than practicing the physical part of the game.

Once you do master the mental techniques they become second nature and you just do them without having to think about it.

So if you are motivated to play better on the golf course - you need to start using mental techniques - a good place to start is by using visualization.

Numerous studies have been done that prove the effectiveness of visualization exercises.  (Please see Chapter 11 "Visualize Success" in my book "GolfNosis - Tee Time For Your Mind - Mental Techniques For Golf That Work!")


Step 2 - Focus on what you Want

Think about what it is exactly that you want to happen.

Fill in all the details make it crystal clear.

For example if you are facing a twenty foot putt, you would visualize putting the ball so it rolls along the green and straight into the hole.

You can also focus on what you don't want and then switch it around to what you do want.

For example - turn what you don't want "I don't want to hit it into the trees" into what you do want - "I will hit my ball straight, right into the middle of the fairway within easy reach of the green".


Step 3 - Perform the Visualization

Replay what you want to accomplish - start by playing it backwards in your mind.

For example lets say your are facing that 20 foot putt to make birdie.

You would think about, imagine or even just pretend how you are looking at your ball in the hole, then going backwards seeing the ball in your mind's eye moving out of the hole and going back down the line all the way to your putter.

Now you visualize the action you will take to get your desired result - the ball in the hole.

Begin by visualizing yourself standing over your ball, taking a confident backstroke, then gently but firmly stroking your putt and watching the ball roll easily down the line and straight back into the hole.

Make use of all of your senses when you visualize.  

Associate into the visualization (be seeing things through your own eyes - put yourself there mentally).

Feel the putter in your hands and the motion of your arms as you putt, hear the sound of the ball being hit and then the sound it makes as it rolls along the green straight to the hole.

Also hear your playing partners saying "Wow - great putt".

Smell the fresh cut grass. 

See every small detail of the green.

The more vivid and realistic you make your visualization the more effective the result.

One way to make your visualization exponentially more powerful is to use self-hypnosis.

Put yourself into a hypnotic trance state using self-hypnosis (please see 3 Easy Seps to Self-Hypnosis and the free audio file Setting Up Your Self-Hypnosis Trigger ).

When you are in the wonderful state of hypnosis your visualizations will become much more realistic and will become increasingly more effective.

Step 4 - Let it GO!

Do not think about it anymore - just focus on your target - let your subconscious do what it knows how to do best.

Just let it all go - forget about it and let your subconscious mind control your body and make the putt.

By visualizing you  have instructed your subconscious mind exactly what you want it to do and now it the time to get your conscious-thinking mind out of the way and let your subconscious do what it does best - make the shot as pre-programmed by your visualization practice.
